OLPC Afghanistan have developed a prototype human power machine that can charge the laptop as it runs / is being used and can even be run without difficulty by typical 3rd/4th graders.
The system connects the Freeplay hand crank with pedals underneath to enable the XO to be used as long as desired at home, into the night, etc; and it requires no additional or backup battery.
The human power system was designed by OLPC Afghanistan's deployment technician Akmal Waak and Mike Dawson. We hope that this will make XO deployment in the many areas beyond the power grid more effective.
The next prototype will be built to be smaller to be carried around and simply placed on the floor with rubber pads.
You can watch the demonstration of this machine in this video (or download it from here) Full specifications / diagrams will be published through the OLPC Wiki as soon as possible.

The XO laptop has proved in other countries notably Peru and Uruguay to be an extremely cost effective option to radically improve the quality of education. These computers will be integrated into teaching curricula, providing students with a vast educational resource, access to word processing, and many other educational programs, email, and internet browser software. More than 500,000 such laptops have been distributed globally.

On 31st of May 2009, a collaboration was established between OLPC Afghanistan, Master Teachers by Satellite for Afghanistan (MSTA) and Afghan Film to develop an educational game for the XO laptops deployed in Afghanistan.
We will use stories of Nasruddin to guide children through the game. The game will focus mainly on literacy (Dari, Pashto) and numeracy; in later stages science subjects such as physics, biology and chemistry will be added. OLPC Afghanistan expects that the game will be developed in next 2-3 months. |
